Remove Old Paint and Rust
Before you can start the restoration, be sure to remove any rust or old paint. Use a paint scraper for all wrought iron fence designs. Don’t forget hard-to-reach areas like joints. Use coarse-grit sandpapers after. After you remove all rust from affected areas, go over again with a medium-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
Deal with the Rust
You might remove all rust, not just the gritty stuff, when restoring metal fencing. You don’t want the rust to spread and destroy your fencing. Use a commercial rust neutralize to scrub the fence. You can also use a natural solution of white vinegar and lemon juice if you want to avoid chemicals.
Paint
Next you need to use a rust-inhibiting primer. Cover the entire fence. Let it dry for several hours. Then apply at least two coats of rust-resistant paint. Be sure to cover all areas, even tight spots. Ensure that the paint is dry before applying a new coat
Regular Maintenance
After you have followed these simple steps, maintain your fence regularly. Wash with soapy water every six months. Add oil to any latches or springs. Buffer scratches with steel wool. Touch up any damaged areas regularly.
